Maria Montessori
Tiny Hands Studio Montessori is a delightful place for your child to explore with all their senses.
The classroom is designed exactly for them with everything at their height, engaging activities for them to build concentration and refine their skills, and a safe place for them to learn how to be in community with others.
All classes are facilitated by Lê (pronounced as /lei/), an experienced, Montessori-trained teacher who serves as a guide and mentor for parents and children. She introduces activities to your child and others to help in developing social skills, concentration, communication, and a sense of belonging to a group, while modeling ways for you to use skills at home.
Interactions with children are in English; circle time each session includes Vietnamese and English songs. Lê speaks Vietnamese but uses English with the children.
What to bring: It is nice for your child to wear comfortable clothing and to bring a little backpack with a water bottle and a piece of fruit.
It is also a good idea to bring a change of clothes in case your child gets wet working with water.
The intent of the classes at Tiny Hands Studio Montessori is to support your important role as your child’s first teacher.
You come along with your child for the session and learn alongside them on how to apply the Montessori principles at home.
Guidance is offered as you learn to observe and respect the natural development of your child. You also interact and practice Montessori as a living process in an environment prepared with both you and your child in mind.
As part of the course, caregivers gather each month for an adult only discussion group. This session features an overview and discussion of a topic pertaining to child development and parenting, and serves as a forum for the adults to share and exchange information with each other.
Topics are chosen based on request or on what is observed during class, which may include observation, pregnancy and the prenatal life of the child, Symbiotic Period of the infant, setting up the optimal home environment, sensitive periods, encouraging independence, discipline and behavior concerns.
A Montessori guide is indispensable to the success of a Montessori environment, serving as a key facilitator, mentor, and creator of a well-prepared learning environment. With a focus on individualized learning, the guide identifies and nurtures each child's unique needs and strengths, fostering independence and self-directed exploration.
Through keen observation and continuous professional development, the guide models respect, empathy, and a love for learning. They play a crucial role in maintaining order, establishing a positive classroom culture, and collaborating with parents to extend the Montessori principles beyond the school environment.
In essence, the Montessori guide is central to creating an atmosphere that promotes holistic child development and embodies the principles of the Montessori method.
Our guide is an AMI certified Montessori educator for ages 0-3, a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator, and a RIE Educaring® Approach enthusiast. We will not only help bring out the best in children, but their parents too. With great respect for the child and personal understanding as parents, we look forward to sharing Montessori with you.
Maria Montessori
One hundred years ago, Dr Maria Montessori, an inspirational educator, developed a unique method of education, based on research into childhood learning.
The Montessori approach fosters children’s love of learning and encourages independence by providing an environment of activities and materials which children use at their own pace. This builds self-confidence, inner discipline, a sense of self-worth and instills positive social behavior.
The child is able to select the activity of their choice and is encouraged to work with the material for as long as they wish in order to develop concentration and mastery of the skill. The child takes responsibility for their work and is encouraged to pack it away and return it to its place on the shelf, ready for the next child. If another child is working with the activity, the child is told it will be available soon. They are then welcome to watch but not touch, or encouraged to find another work that is available. This works, even for children 1 year old! Children learn to respect others, not interfere with other’s work, and to share by waiting their turn.
Montessori education begins at birth and is an education for life.
Activities such as table washing, watering plants, making a snack and washing up, enable the child to participate in daily life and promote the development of concentration, hand-eye co-ordination and muscular control.
The language materials expose the child to rich language from an early age. Baskets with classified objects, such as kitchen objects, farm animals, items of clothing, birds, fruits, enable children to concretely hold the object while hearing its name. There are also trays with objects and matching cards, for example, matching tools to pictures of tools. And then sets of cards with pictures of vehicles, types of cats, etc, and well chosen books provide limitless amount of language opportunities for your child.
Some examples of manipulatives for fine motor development are puzzles, posting boxes, threading, nesting, opening and closing jars. These manipulatives are varied and provide endless opportunities for your child to develop their eye-hand coordination, cognitive development, and pincer grip ready for writing in later years. Opportunities for gross motor movement are found in many practical life activities, such as table washing, and in movement games during circle time.
Like all the other activities in the environment, these activities are set up for the child to do the whole activity without adult assistance. A child wishing to paint can put on their apron, hang up the paper, paint paint paint, hang up the completed painting on the drying rack, and wipe down the board for the next child. The adult will only step in when necessary and then step back for the child to continue for themselves.
A varied selection of instruments is available for the children to explore and we have a lot of fun singing songs during circle time.
The materials in the environment are all attractive, functional and manageable for a child with small hands—for example, small china jugs and glasses for pouring their own water, and small knives for spreading their own cracker for snack. The art on the walls is at the child’s height for them to appreciate.
